Sacred Sexuality 101

Sacred sexuality is a simple yet powerful concept: it’s a mindset centered on viewing your sexuality and erotic activity as something sacred and meaningful. It doesn’t require any particular spiritual belief or religious practice. Instead, it’s about bringing intention and mindfulness to your sexual self. Whether you’re in a relationship or not, and whether you’re sexually active or not, sacred sexuality invites you to see your sexual energy as something valuable and deserving of respect.

This idea has roots in ancient practices like tantra and Taoist sexuality. These traditions teach that sexual energy is connected to your overall life energy and well-being. In these practices, sex isn’t just a physical act—it’s a way to connect deeply with yourself and, if you choose, with others. But sacred sexuality goes beyond those traditions by focusing on the mindset you cultivate, rather than specific activities or partners.

A common misconception is that only certain people can participate, such as those who are spiritual, in a romantic relationship, or sexually active. This isn’t true. Aromantic or asexual individuals, for example, can absolutely embrace sacred sexuality. It’s about how you think about your sexuality, not the specific acts or who you engage with. The key is honoring your sexual self, whatever that means for you, and treating it with the respect it deserves.
