What Are SMART Goals?

When it comes to improving your health, setting the right goals is key. That’s where SMART goals come in. SMART is an easy way to remember the five important parts of a good goal. It helps you set goals that are clear, realistic, and achievable. Here’s what SMART stands for:

S – Specific

A good goal is specific. This means it clearly says what you want to achieve. Instead of saying, “I want to be healthier,” a specific goal would be, “I want to walk 30 minutes every day.” This way, you know exactly what you're aiming for.

M – Measurable

You need to be able to measure your progress. This means adding a number or some other way to track how you're doing. For example, instead of “I want to eat better,” a measurable goal would be, “I will eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.”

A – Achievable

Your goal should be something you can realistically do. Setting a goal that's too hard can be discouraging. If you’re just starting, saying “I will run 5 miles every day” might not be achievable. A better goal could be, “I will start by jogging 1 mile three times a week.”

R – Relevant

Make sure your goal makes sense for your life and your health. A relevant goal is one that fits with your overall wellness plan. For example, if your goal is to improve your energy levels, a relevant goal could be, “I will sleep 8 hours a night.”

T – Time-bound

Finally, your goal should have a deadline or a time frame. This keeps you motivated and on track. Instead of saying, “I want to lose weight,” a time-bound goal would be, “I will lose 10 pounds by December 1st.”

SMART goals help you stay focused and give you a clear plan to follow. Whether you're just starting your health journey or looking to make long-term changes, setting SMART goals can make a big difference. Ready to set some SMART goals and take control of your health?
