Wednesday Wellness Check-in: Sexual Health Awareness Month

Sexual Health Awareness Month meme

September is Sexual Health Awareness Month, and as a sexual health and intimate relationship coach, I wanted to make one of my Wednesday Wellness Check-ins about sexual health. Since I post content on LinkedIn, I aim to keep things SFW (safe for work), so I’ll keep this check-in PG. If you’re interested in more in-depth content around sexual health, consider signing up for my new monthly newsletter, Desire Discovery, launching in October 2024.

Eight years ago this month, I attended my first Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco. For those unfamiliar, it’s an event centered around sex and sexuality, particularly for members of the leather and kink communities. I met Graylin Thornton, Mr. International Drummer 1993, who told me I was diving into the deep end. He was right! But that was intentional—I had set out on a journey to understand my sexual health and was determined to learn as much as possible.

This journey started in the summer of 2016. While I’d been out as a gay man my entire adult life, I realized that my sexuality didn’t align with mainstream gay culture. I wasn’t interested in apps or casual hookups, and anal sex wasn’t a priority for me. So, I began to explore what truly brought me joy and fulfillment.

As I delved deeper, I discovered that sexuality, mental health, and spirituality were deeply interconnected. This became the thesis of my exploration. Along the way, I encountered practices and perspectives I had never heard of—certainly not in high school health class or medical school. Concepts like Tantra, Daoism, and other esoteric teachings began to reshape my approach to relationships and intimacy.

The past eight years have been an eye-opening and deeply rewarding journey that I’m excited to share with others. I now lead workshops on Sacred Sexuality and speak at spiritual and mental health events, helping others explore how these areas intersect with sexuality. In my coaching practice, I work with individuals, couples, and polycules to help them (re)discover the intimate aspects of their Healthy Self.

If you’d like to learn more about Sacred Sexuality, don’t forget to sign up for my Desire Discovery newsletter, premiering in October.
